What do the online and away dots mean?

Q: What do the online and away dots mean?

They show whether a friend is using Creta right now. Online means active, away means signed in but idle for a while, and no dot means offline. Presence is shared across Creta, so a friend playing in the desktop app shows as online here too. It follows the account, not the app.
